The position of Portfolio Mananger Credit Officer I is responsible for SBA loan activity within assigned lending limits. Oversees loan underwriting activities to ensure loan policies are being followed and credit quality is maintained. The individual must be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. This individual performs a variety of tasks involved in the credit approval process and focuses primarily on the small business and consumer segment of the bank's loan portfolio. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.


  • Reviews and approves/declines consumer and small business loans within their authority; making recommendations on loan structure, terms, and pricing so as not to expose the Bank to undue credit risk.
  • Reinforces the application of superior customer service through his or her own example along with appropriate follow through with involved customers and employees.
  • Provides information to Credit Administration concerning any negative trends in the loan portfolio or feedback on competitive lending conditions prevalent in their respective market areas.
  • Responds to inquiries or refers inquiries to the appropriate department or person; exhibits the necessary follow through with customers and/or staff involved.
  • Assists loan officers and credit analysts in preparing spreadsheets and analyzes financial information including financial statements and tax returns
  • Prepares and distributes credit information covering loan quality trends, growth trends, loan product concentrations; works closely with other credit managers in reviewing such topics as local real estate data and assessing the impact on the Bank's loan portfolio.
  • Attempts to ensure that individual loans are risk rated correctly.
  • Consistently applies good decision making techniques pertaining to inquiries, approvals, requests as they apply to existing policies and procedures, keeping within assigned approval limits and using these instances as learning tools for employee development.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial industry, economy, market conditions, rates, vendors and competition.
  • Assists the Bank in establishing and maintaining market position and credit quality in the financing arena.
  • Participates in various internal committees assigned by senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Provides leadership and training to less experienced loan officers, analysts and credit underwriters and other staff members.
  • Operates computer terminal or personal computer to obtain and process data
  • Answers telephones, answers questions from lending officers.
  • Assists with on-going computerization of the Credit Administration function.
  • Manages and supervises credit underwriting and analyst personnel assigned as direct reports to sponsor career training and development and growth
  • Completes annual compliance courses.



  • Adheres specifically to all corporate policies and procedures.  Also adheres to Federal and State regulations and laws including the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed.



Knowledge & Experience: These specifications are general guidelines based on the minimum experience normally considered essential to the satisfactory performance of this position.   • Bachelor's degree in applicable field and at least 5 years of experience in the loan function and/or credit administration. Work related experience should consist of duties in a banking environment and include loan production, credit underwriting and documentation.


  • Advanced knowledge of Bank credit underwriting policies, products and services; related state and federal laws and regulations, and other Bank operational policies and procedures.


  • Excellent organizational and time management skills ability to work with minimal supervision.


  • Advanced skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation; mainframe computer system; word processing, spreadsheet and specialty software programs.


  • Advanced understanding of financial reporting, cash flows and credit underwriting to include strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions.


  • Provide leadership in the credit administration area to include strong negotiation skills and responsibility for the enforcement of the bank's credit policies and procedures

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Vision, hearing and speech are required. Individuals must have the ability to work with detailed information in a concentrated manner.


The environment for this position is an open office that is mostly clean and comfortable. It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, etc. The incumbent is in a non-confined office-type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will.


The incumbent in the course of performing this position spends time writing, typing, speaking, listening, lifting (up to approximately 25 pounds), carrying, seeing (such as close, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and adjusted focus), sitting, pulling, walking, standing, squatting, kneeling and reaching.


The incumbent for this position may operate any or all of the following: telephone, copy and fax machines, adding machine (calculator), typewriter, computer terminal, personal computer and related printers.
